- URBAN GARDEN PLANT LIST at UNITED FRIENDS SCHOOL, QUAKERTOWN, PA
A small garden space between a parking lot and street makes for a tough place. This native garden provides year round color and texture, utilizing plants tolerant of drought and urban soils. This is a tough-guy garden: no need for irrigation, staking, fussing, or fertilizing. We just leave it alone and pull the few weeds that manage to edge in here and there. This plant palette will work in similar areas where soil is compacted and/or lacking in organic matter and where the only water source is rain. DOWNLOAD
- WET SWALE GARDEN PLANT LIST
Wet areas are tough for many home owners to manage, but they can be vibrant, beautiful gardens which provide ample habitat and food sources for wildlife. The key is selecting native species that are adapted to floodplain conditions. Since our region contains floodplains and low-lying areas, there are many ferns, grasses, flowering perennials, shrubs, and trees that are very happy in these seasonally wet soils. Again, no fertilizing, extensive pruning, or staking is required when the right plants are sited properly. This is a low maintenance garden with ground covers and clumping specimens that crowd out unwanted weeds. Over time, as the native plants fill in, weed pressure drops very low.
